Book I, Chapter IV: The Laws of Magic (Part III)

The book had kept Maia awake for days and cursed her mind. She wanted to read it, she needed to read it and face the demons in her memories. The next week, she gave in after another stream of sleepless nights. In the rare books section of the arcane library she found the book exactly where she had stuffed it. She began to read:

Before our universe existed,
Before our time began,
Yar Shurrah was ancient,
Yar Shurrah was God.

Our God was somewhat twisted,
Our God brought us pain,
Our God made us suffer
To power his domain.

Can you hear him calling?
The voice within the void,
Can you hear his whisper
In the words that are here listed?

Y’AI’NG’NGAH

YAH SURRAH

H’EE-L’GEB

F’AI THRODOG

UAAAH

Maia struggled the pronounce the final stanza in her mind and tried to speak it aloud. As she slowly made her way through the impossible syllables she found the words beginning to form in her head, as if a fell voice whispered them in her head. Upon finishing the verse there was a pounding in Maia’s head, something had awoken and was trying to break through. Maia read the passage again, this time it flowed off her tongue in a voice that didn’t seem like her own and dust seemed to fall from the pages of the book. There was an explosion of invisible energy that went through Maia like a wave and all the settled dust began to form a cyclone around her.

A MORTAL DISTURBS MY SLUMBER
A MORTAL DISTURBS MY SLEEP,
A MORTAL WONDERS AT
THE SECRETS THAT I KEEP!

boomed a voice that seemed to come from all around her. Maia was frozen and could not speak.

SPEAK MORTAL
SAY IT TRUE
WHAT WILL THIS GOD
DO FOR YOU

The voice made Maia drop to her knees, it caused pain throughout her body, but its effect was intoxicating.

“I am Maia Dunncastle, I seek knowledge.”

KNOWLEDGE IT WANTS
KNOWLEDGE IT SEEKS
TO MASTER ALL MAGICAL TECHNIQUES.

The voice rang before Maia could continue.

“How did you know?” Maia said, shocked

The voice laughed like a hurricane.

I KNOW ALL YOUR SECRETS
I KNOW ALL YOUR GAMES
I KNOW YOUR DESIRES
AND ALL YOUR WICKED AIMS

Maia felt dizzy and the initial pain from the voice had crumbled into a warm, soothing pleasure that travelled up her legs and ascended her spine.

“I want power, I want to break the laws of magic and be as powerful as Merlin the Great was.” Maia could not hold back her desires. She could not stop her tongue in the presence of the God. The God laughed again with malice.

I KNOW OF MERLIN THE GREAT
THE WORLD NEVER LEARNED HIS FATE
BUT I KNOW.

“He was real?” interrupted Maia as if the world became clearer to her.

MERLIN WAS REAL
HE WAS MY TOOL
BUT IN THE END
A MORTAL FOOL.

NOT LIKE MAIA
A FINE MAGE
BOUND TO NOBODY
BOUND TO NO CAGE

YOU WANT POWER
I’LL SHOW YOU THE WAY
BUT BEWARE THE BOUNTY
YOU MUST PAY.

There was a brilliant flash of red followed by a great, round, crimson eye opening in the dust storm. As Maia stared into it thousands of red eyes opened in the writhing winds and Maia lost consciousness.

  1. This chapter is very rough and will need some TLC. Perhaps I have moved too fast and need to slow down Maia’s story. I just needed to get this part out of the way so I could move on past this bugbear. I am going to go back and edit when I hit 10,000 words and neaten all of the chapters up!
